Mbanza Kongo - To support the country's most disadvantaged and the fight against poverty are the current priorities of the Angolan Catholic Church, said Saturday in Mbanza Kongo, Zaire province, the President of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST), Bishop Filomeno Vieira Dias.

Speaking to the press, on the fringes of the lecture on "The Contribution of Churches in the Building of Culture and Human Being in the Ancient Capital of the Kingdom of Kongo", the Catholic cleric stressed that CEAST is concerned about citizens who need more support and the presence of the church.

"We want a church closer to the poor, those who struggle every day with many difficulties to survive,"  said the prelate, for whom this interest should be seen solely as a contribution far from replacing the role of the state.

Archbishop Filomeno Vieira Dias is a member of CEAST's Bishops led by the Apostolic Nuncio Dom Peter Rajic who will participate in the celebrations of the first anniversary of the elevation of the Historic Center of Mbanza Kongo to the world heritage site by UNESCO on 8 July this year.
