The decision was announced Tuesday by the Japanese Government after meeting with members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
It was agreed that the two events will not take place until the summer of 2021, maintaining the designation “Tokyo 2020”.
The Olympic flame (later to be changed to a Paralympic flame) will continue to burn in Japanese territory until the events take place.
The Olympic Games had already been postponed three times due to military conflict, and now for coronavirus pandemic grounds.
Berlin should have hosted the games in 1916, but they were canceled because of World War I - the German city would eventually host in 1936.
Tokyo should have hosted the Summer Games in 1940, but Japan abdicated even before the start of World War II - it would later be attributed to Helsinki, but without materialising.
The 1944 edition was scheduled for London, with the English capital hosting the first post-war games in 1948. Helsinki received the 1952 event and Tokyo 1964.
