Huawei/Unitel: Free internet access to be available for Public schools

Luanda - Huawei Angola has announced plans to invest USD 60 million for construction of its headquarters to ensure, in partnership with Unitel mobile operator, the training and promotion of digital education for public school students in the country.

The company plans to carry out experiment pilot in the provinces of Bié and Huambo.

The programme was  presented at the signing ceremony of memorandum by Unitel and Huawei Angola.

Signed the deal general director for cooperative affairs of the company of Unitel, Eunice de Carvalho, and chairperson of executive commission (Deuty CEO) of Huawei Angola, Liuhongzhen Michael.

The two-year memorandum, renewable for the same period, will provide for supplying of equipment and technological solutions by Huawei, while Unitel will provide internet and connectivity to schools.

The programme will initially cover 480 children for 2021, with the handover of some equipment, such as 480 tablets for students, 50 desktop computers for teachers and 50 projectors for classrooms.

 “The third component in this project is the Ministry of Education, on behalf of Executive. This first phase will cover students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades. But the intention is to start with the 1st grade to teach them to handle the technologies”, she explained.

The official, who did not disclose the investment, said the amount spent on training for  teachers in one year period is around USD100.000, adding that should conditions allow other schools in the other provinces of the country will be included.

Huawei member, Edric Chu, said that his company will invest USD 60 million in building its new headquarters in Luanda, including a training and an innovation center, as well as an experiment center.

He added that the agreement will bring more advanced technologies and solutions to Angola, and develop research and development in the different areas of the country.

The conclusion of the centers is set for the end of 2021.
